The modernisation works of Nagpur railway station, under Central Railway’s Nagpur Division, is expected to be finished by end-2026, the Indian Railways said.
The Rs 488 crore project, executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), began in 2022. Chief Project Manager Pawan Patil highlighted restoration of the 1925 heritage building, linked to India’s freedom struggle, as a major feature, preserving its legacy alongside modern upgrades. Cultural elements like murals, digital signage, and artistic wall cladding will showcase Nagpur’s heritage.
Currently handling 283 trains and 68,000 passengers daily, capacity is planned for over one lakh passengers. “Upon completion, the station will become a benchmark for the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, ensuring seamless connectivity, world-class facilities, and an inclusive environment,” officials noted.
Parallelly, Ajni station, threekm away, is being modernised at Rs 359.82 crore to handle 40,000 passengers, easing Nagpur’s congestion. Facilities will include 21 lifts, 17 escalators, six travelators, spacious waiting halls, CCTV, access control systems, and Divyang-friendly infrastructure.
