The MoEF has asked Standing Committee of National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) to visit the area and prepare a site inspection report for the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The Maharashtra State Wildlife Board has asked the proposal for wildlife clearance for the airport as the site falls within ten km of the Karnala bird sanctuary. The EIA report for the Navi Mumbai airport by the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, stated that the location of the airport was 12.5 km away from the Karnala bird sanctuary. The sanctuary is situated along the Mumbai-Goa-Konkan National Highway No 17 and is 12.5 km south of the proposed project site and falls outside of core area. It is away from landing and take-off funnel of Navi Mumbai International Airport.
City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is the nodal agency for the airport project which will come up over 2,000 ha with an investment of Rs 14,573 crore. It has already faced delays with problems over land acquisition and rehabilitation and cost escalation. The Navi Mumbai international airport project has received environmental clearance in November 2010.
