Mumbai is set to see significant improvements in its railway infrastructure with the expansion of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and the addition of a new terminus at Parel.
These long-awaited projects have gained momentum, as the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) of the Union Railway Ministry has approved them. Once cleared by the Railway Board, tenders will be issued, and work is expected to begin within the current financial year. LTT, one of Mumbai’s busiest stations with a daily footfall of 70,000 passengers, will see the addition of three to four new platforms, allowing for up to 10 more long-distance trains. This expansion aims to ease congestion and accommodate growing demand, especially during peak seasons.
Meanwhile, the new Parel terminus will serve as an additional hub, reducing pressure on Dadar and CSMT stations. “Parel will be an additional hub for the city, helping to decongest these stations,” said Madhu Kotian, President of the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.
