Meghalaya Minister-in-Charge of Public Health Engineering Marcuise N Marak has reviewed the progress of the New Shillong Water Supply Project, aimed at ensuring sustainable drinking water for the fast-growing New Shillong Township and 32 nearby villages.
The project is considered crucial for supporting future urban expansion and improving long-term water security in the state capital region. During an on-site inspection at Nongkhali village, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the current pace of work despite early challenges. According to the Minister, civil works have reached about 30 percent completion, while procurement of major components such as pipes, pumps and machinery is nearly 90 percent complete. Initial delays were caused by land-related issues and difficult terrain, particularly the steep gorge-like dam location.
Reiterating optimism about the project’s timeline, the Minister noted that dam construction is expected to begin shortly. “Almost all foundational work is nearing completion. Excavation and clearing of land for necessary construction are almost done. Within the next 10 days, we will be able to start construction of the dam,”he said.
