On 17 January, 2024, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the Shree Mandir Parikrama Prakalpa (SMPP), a development project around Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.
The 75-mtrs-wide space encircling the temple, known as the heritage corridor, has now been named the SMPP and divided into nine different zones. The SMPP has a sevem-mtrs. green buffer zone, adjacent to the Meghanada Pacheri, or the boundary of the temple, this is followed by the 10-mtrs.Antar Pradakshina. The corridor is designed to provide improved facilities, amenities and infrastructure to facilitate the movement of devotees.
The 10-mtrs. public convenience zone has nine restrooms, drinking water facilities, two information-cum-donation kiosks, and three mini cloakrooms, apart from a police kiosk.
In addition, the 14-mtrs. landscape zone in the temple corridor features a garden, and an eight-mtrs. Bahya Pradakshina offers a peaceful retreat, complementing the spiritual atmosphere of the temple. There is also a shaded footpath, and a dedicated emergency lane.
