Odisha's government is set to focus on port-led industrialisation by enhancing its logistics infrastructure, particularly through the development of new railway corridors under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode.
The state is planning a new rail corridor for the Talcher coalfields, estimated at Rs 4,882 crore, alongside the Gopalpur-Rayagada-Jeypore economic corridor that will combine road and rail networks. Separate port-based rail corridors are also being planned. A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja emphasised the need to expedite the Talcher rail corridors for quicker coal evacuation.
Mahanadi Coalfields aims to increase coal dispatch via rail to 88 percent (162.8 million tonne) by 2029-30. Phase-I of the Talcher project (Angul-Balram rail link) has already been completed, and plans for the Phase-II (Balram-Putagadia-Tentuloi-Jharpada) and outer corridor (BudhapankaLuburi-Tentuloi) are progressing.
