The Government of India, in collaboration with states and Union Territories, has made significant strides in expanding tap water access under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal, which was launched in August 2019 to provide tap water to every rural household in the country.
As of now, over 81 percent of rural households across India have access to tap water, showcasing impressive progress towards the mission’s goal. The scheme aims to ensure that every rural household, regardless of location, has access to clean and safe drinking water directly at their doorstep. The mission also emphasises sustainable water management and infrastructure development at the local level.
According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, "The progress of JJM reflects the government's commitment to improving the quality of life in rural areas through better access to basic water facilities." This initiative not only aims to improve public health but also promotes economic growth in rural India.
