The Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) has received the green signal from Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to fast track projects like the Metro rail and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Pune.
The Maharashtra CM, on 25 March 2015, announced in the Legislative Assembly that the State government would soon come out with the official notification regarding the formation of PMRDA.
PMRDA was first mooted in 1976 when the regional plan (RP) of Pune was drawn up.
PMRDA will have jurisdiction over municipal corporations of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the three cantonment boards -- Pune, Khadki and Dehu; 11 municipal councils and numerous gram panchayats. The total jurisdiction of the PMRDA will be over 3,000 sq km.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Newtownship Development Authority, also known as Pradhikaran, will cease to function once the PMRDA is set up.
The authority will be headed by a senior IAS officer and will have its own staff to implement development plans.
PMRDA’s scope of work -
-
To revise Pune’s regional plan
-
To ensure systematic development of the region
-
Drawing up a common development plan, and setting up “land zones”
-
To be a common planning and execution platform which will prevent overlap in plans, or friction between planning authorities of contiguous civic limits
-
To make project implementation easier, smoother and faster
