The Public Works Department (PWD) has resumed work on the Ennaikolpudur Thumbalahalli irrigation project to bring water from the Thenpennai River to several lakes across Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu.
The project involves constructing a 50-km-long canal, which will carry water from the Ennaikolpudur check dam to the Thumbalahalli Dam. Initially proposed in 2019 with an estimated cost of Rs 175 crore, the project’s cost has been revised to Rs 233.37 crore. Over 3,400 acres of land are expected to benefit from the scheme, while the canal will help supply water to 34 lakes and one dam in the region. However, delays occurred due to land acquisition issues and objections from farmers in Krishnagiri.
PWD officials noted, "We need to dig out canals of almost 22.5 km...the land acquisition has been completed, and we're working at a faster pace to finish the project." The project is expected to be completed by next year.
