On 19 November, 2025, Ministers EV Velu (Public Works) and SS Sivasankar (Transport) laid the foundation stone for a new anicut across the Thenpennai River in Kallakurichi.
The Rs 75 crore project, initiated by the Water Resources Department (WRD), aims to irrigate 4,130 acres of agricultural land. The anicut, measuring 240 mtrs. in length, will harness 5.83 million cubic ft. of water. It will also improve groundwater levels, benefiting 124 borewells in surrounding areas. The project was announced by Chief Minister MK Stalin during the 2025-26 Assembly session, with work now underway.
The new anicut will help utilise previously unused water upstream of the Tirukoyilur anicut, addressing longstanding demands from local farmers. District Collector MS Prasanth and WRD officials attended the ceremony.
