In a strategic move to modernise urban mobility, Prayagraj authorities have proposed replacing the previously planned Metrolite project with a full-fledged Metro system.
The decision, driven by the city's surging population and escalating traffic congestion, outlines a 44-km network comprising 39 stations across two corridors. The first line, from Bamrauli to Jhunsi City Lake, will cover 23 km with 20 stations, while the second, from Shantipuram to Chheoki, spans 21 km with 19 stations. A central interchange at Parade Ground will ensure smooth connectivity between lines. The Rs 10,000 crore project—an upgrade from the Metrolite's Rs 8,747 crore estimate, will feature three-coach trains capable of carrying over 1,200 passengers.
A 30-member Metro Council will manage land acquisition, impacting around 100 villages. Affected farmers will receive compensation at four times the circle rate. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected post-Diwali, with route inspections imminent. The shift to a full Metro is set to significantly enhance urban transport and reduce congestion and pollution.
