The Coimbatore Metro Rail Project is set to commence preliminary work in January-February 2025, as announced by Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) Managing Director MA Siddique. Speaking after a stakeholders' meeting, Siddique stated that the Union government is expected to approve the project soon.
The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 1 is already prepared, outlining two corridors along Avinashi Road and Sathyamangalam Road, with an estimated cost of Rs 10,740 crore. Land acquisition for the project will take up to two years, with construction slated to complete three years after the acquisition process. Around 10 hectares of land will be acquired for the corridors, and an additional 16 hectares in Neelambur will be allocated for a depot and service station.
The Metro system will feature a three -coach train accommodating 700 passengers, a design distinct from Chennai’s 4-coach system. The alignment for the Avinashi Road corridor includes land on the northern side near PRS Grounds, Peelamedu Police Station, and Coimbatore Medical College, connecting VOC ground to Neelambur.
The ongoing construction of the 10.1 km flyover on Avinashi Road has been taken into account during the planning phase. This integration ensures efficient use of resources and minimal disruption to the city’s infrastructure.
