Premier Energies, a leading Indian solar cell and module manufacturer, has formed a 74:26 joint venture with Sino-American Silicon Products (SAS), a Taiwan-based company whose subsidiary, GlobalWafers, ranks as the world’s third-largest semiconductor silicon wafer producer.
The agreement, signed on 19 May, 2025, aims to bolster India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem through a two GW per annum facility which will slice polysilicon ingots into silicon wafers for use in photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules. The joint venture leverages Premier Energies’ large-scale solar production infrastructure and SAS’s deep expertise in silicon wafer technology.
Doris Hsu, Chairperson and CEO of SAS and GlobalWafers, highlighted this move as a critical step toward expanding operations in India, improving supply chain resilience, and meeting growing solar demand both domestically and globally. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in the sector, particularly in solar supply chain localisation and technology transfer.
