The government of Delhi has accorded approval for three corridors under the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project in the state.
The three corridors are: 111 km Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat; 180 km Delhi-Gurgaon-Alwar; and 90 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut. The total length of the three corridors is 349 km, as the Delhi-Alwar corridor terminates at Delhi Border.
The project will connect Delhi with Meerut, Panipat and Alwar by high speed trains. It was first mooted by the National Capital Regional Planning Board (NCRPB) of the Union Urban Development Ministry.
The Delhi-Meerut corridor, through Anand Vihar to Sarai Kale Khan, will be implemented as proposed by NCRPB and also supported by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). NCRPB has proposed to implement Delhi-Panipat corridor with destination upto Kashmere Gate.
The Delhi-Alwar corridor will start from Alwar and may terminate at Gurgaon near Delhi border.
Earlier the project was aimed at connecting Delhi with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh by 2016, but was put on the back burner due to the Lok Sabha polls.
