The Indian Railways has initiated the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for 26 infrastructure projects spanning 1,960 km across Andhra Pradesh, aimed at enhancing both passenger and freight connectivity.
These projects include construction of new railway lines, high-speed bullet train corridors, additional lines on congested routes, bypasses, and rail-over-rail bridges. Among the highlights are the Hyderabad–Bengaluru and Hyderabad–Chennai high-speed corridors, which will pass through Andhra Pradesh, covering 300 km and 464 km respectively.
New rail lines are also being planned for 11 previously unconnected routes, such as Ongole–Donakonda, Dupadu–Betancharla, and Machilipatnam–Narasapuram–Repalle. To reduce freight congestion, third and fourth lines are proposed on busy corridors like Vijayawada–Chennai, Vijayawada–Hyderabad, and Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam. In response to high coal and mineral freight traffic, fifth and sixth lines are under consideration between Simhachalam North and Kothavalasa. Officials emphasized that “the focus is on improving both passenger connectivity and freight movement in the state.”
