The Indian Railways will execute 491 projects in northeastern states at a cost of Rs 6.48 lakh crore.
A total of 189 new railway lines, 55 gauge conversion and 247 doubling projects are in different stages of planning, approval, and execution across states.
The total length of these projects is 48,861 km. The total expenditure on the projects is Rs 1.43 lakh crore upto March 2019 while the length commissioned is 9,113 km.
Moreover by FY22, all the railway lines in the seven northeastern states will be electrified. The timely completion of railway projects depends on various factors such as land acquisition by state government, forest clearance, shifting of infringing utilities and statutory clearances from various authorities, among others.
The railway authority has been trying to extend the railway lines in three remaining capital cities of northeast India -- Imphal in Manipur, Aizawl in Mizoram and Kohima in Nagaland by 2020.
