Reliance Industries has proposed to
set up a bio diesel plant near its existing 33 million tpa petroleum refinery at
Jamnagar in Gujarat. The new unit is expected to commission by 2008, dovetailing
with the commissioning of the new 27 million tpa petroleum refinery of Reliance
Petroleum.
The bio diesel plant is likely to cost
Rs.2,000 crore -- with Rs.500 crore being towards the plant development and
Rs.1,500 crore for Jathropa (the additive) cultivation. The company has
identified 200 acres of land at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh for the crop
cultivation.
Reliance LifeSciences, also part of
the Mukesh Ambani Group, will provide the technical know-how for the project.
The company, incidentally, in the midst of a developing a massive research
centre at Navi Mumbai.
The bio diesel thus produced will be
distributed through the 1,218 existing retail outlets of Reliance Industries.
The company has permission to set up 5,849 retail outlets nationwide.
