Construction of the Rs 110-crore speciality block at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchy is progressing on schedule, with completion expected by November.
The facility, inaugurated in March 2024, is being built on a 2,600-sq. mtrs. area as a ground-plus-six-floor structure. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is expected to inaugurate the block in December. The new building will accommodate 600 beds and consolidate departments such as general medicine, surgery, dermatology, and a centralised blood bank. "All structural work has been completed. Interior finishing, tiling, waterproofing, and electrical systems are now in progress," said a senior PWD engineer.
Once operational, the block will help decongest existing hospital facilities. The outpatient section will be shifted to the ground and first floors. “The integrated facility will improve inter-department coordination and reduce delays in diagnostics and referrals,” said a senior Health Department official. An extra Rs 24 crore has also been sanctioned for procuring equipment and surgical tools.
