Construction of a modern fishing harbour at Vizhinjam will commence in October 2025.
The Rs 271 crore project, approved by the Kerala cabinet in March 2025, is divided into two phases. Phase 1, worth Rs 146 crore, is being executed by Adani Vizhinjam Port and includes a 500 mtrs. fishing berth and supporting infrastructure. Phase 2, costing Rs 125 crore, involves building a 250 mtrs. seaward breakwater at a 45-degree angle, for which the harbour engineering department will float tenders this month.
Completion is targeted for 2027, with work scheduled outside monsoon seasons. Authorities have actively engaged with the fishing community, local church representatives, and fishermen’s groups, including consultations at the Central Water and Power Research Station in Pune. CWPRS recommendations for enhanced safety and functionality have been incorporated, potentially increasing costs.
The new harbour will feature international-standard facilities, including a jetty, locker rooms, auction hall, administrative offices, and canteen. It will be located between the Vizhinjam International Seaport and the existing harbour, supporting traditional boats over trawlers.
