The Kerala government is considering a proposal to give Vizhinjam International Port (VISL) a central role in developing port-related infrastructure.
At a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. A Jayathilak, officials discussed empowering VISL to acquire around 100 acres of land near the port for container yards, logistics parks, warehouses, and terminals. A senior ports department officer noted that “VISL can begin planning the necessary infrastructure even before the gateway traffic starts to flow,” but stressed that final government approval is vital.
Progress on related infrastructure has been slow, with the Outer Ring Road project lacking momentum. Officials urged treating it as a critical component of port operations rather than just a road project. At its 58th board meeting, VISL reiterated its focus on port-driven economic growth and requested the land acquisition go-ahead.
The company is also reviewing the draft tender from Konkan Railway Corporation for the 10.7-km Vizhinjam–Balaramapuram railway line, featuring a 9.43-km tunnel — India’s third longest. This rail link could significantly enhance cargo movement from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, with potential for a new container terminal between Parassala and Neyyatinkara.
