The Centre has sanctioned railway projects worth Rs 89,780 crore in Maharashtra, covering 38 projects with a combined length of 5,098 km.
These projects, approved as of April 1, 2025, include 11 new railway lines, two gauge conversion projects, and 25 doubling works. Over the past three financial years (2022-2025), 98 railway surveys have also been sanctioned, encompassing 29 new line surveys, two gauge conversion surveys, and 67 doubling surveys, totaling 8,603 km. Additionally, platform extension works at 34 stations have been initiated to accommodate 15-car electric multiple unit (EMU) trains.
To enhance capacity in the Mumbai suburban network, major projects under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) have been approved, including MUTP-II, MUTP-III, and MUTP-IIIA. These initiatives involve procuring 238 rakes of 12-car trains equipped with doors, with a combined cost of Rs 19,293 crore. Furthermore, nearly 12 percent of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) runs through Maharashtra, with some sections already commissioned.
