Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has emerged as the single largest steel supplier to the Zojila Tunnel project. This under-construction tunnel is set to become India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel upon completion in 2027.
SAIL has supplied over 31,000 tonne of steel for the project, including TMT Re-bars, structurals, and plates. The company’s consistent supply highlights its strategic role in supporting this critical infrastructure development. “Mega-projects like the Zojila Tunnel consistently trust the reliability and strength of SAIL’s steel,” the company said, reaffirming its commitment to nation-building and infrastructure growth.
Situated at an altitude of 11,578 ft., the 30 km-long tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, via Dras and Kargil. This connectivity is crucial for both civilian and military movement and forms part of the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway.
SAIL’s contribution to the Zojila Tunnel aligns with its legacy of supplying steel to landmark projects such as the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges, solidifying its position as a trusted partner in India’s infrastructure growth.
