Steel Authority of India (SAIL) plans to operationalise its four MTPA Tasra coking coal mine in Jharkhand by the second half of 2026.
This move aligns with SAIL’s strategy to reduce reliance on imported coking coal and support its goal of expanding crude steel production capacity to 35.65 MTPA by 2031. Currently, only 16 percent of SAIL’s coking coal needs are met domestically, with the company consuming 19.37 million tonne (MT) in FY24, of which just 2.45 MT came from Indian sources.
By ramping up domestic mining, SAIL aims to mitigate import costs and secure a stable supply for its growing steel production requirements.
