Sahasra Electronics, an electronics components manufacturer, has earmarked an investment of Rs 350 crore over the next four years for assembling mobile phone memory chipsets, laptop hard drives and motherboards.
The company is setting up an integrated circuit (IC) packaging plant for memory in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, which will entail an investment of Rs 140 crore. The unit will produce 40 million ICs annually.
It is approved to receive incentives by the Central government under the production-linked incentive scheme.
Until now this was the domain of US, Japan and Taiwan where fabs would make semiconductor wafers, which would be packaged by packaging companies. The company is getting into the packaging business. Once it has this ecosystem in the country, the company will set up a fab factory.
The company is aiming to scale up to 100 million IC units annually and already in talks with handset manufacturers including Foxconn, Wistron, Lava, Dixon, Micromax and Reliance Jio for supplying memory.
This will create close to 750 direct jobs in the region. The value addition in the first four years in ICs will be 15 percent and thereafter it will target 50 percent to 55 percent value add. The plant, which will also manufacture solid state drives for laptops and notebooks is expected to begin operations in Q2/2021.
Apart from this, Infopower Technologies, an electronics manufacturer company of Sahasra Group, which is a joint venture with Taiwanese MiTac, will invest in another Rs 210 crore in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
The investment will be made to produce 25,000 motherboards or printed circuit boards per month, primarily for data centres. One-third of this amount will flow in from MiTac along with technology support.
Around 6,000 memory devices such as solid state drives were imported in India in 2019 for data centres, set-top boxes, etc which will be potential customers for the company. The company will be selling them by retail distribution as well as e-commerce companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, among others.
The company is also looking at a major export potential for motherboards to companies like Intel, Acer, etc.
Infopower Technologies has also received a commitment for incentives by the Uttar Pradesh government under the state’s electronics policy for the proposed investment.
