Sewage treatment plant near Pashan Lake in Pune completed

A long-awaited sewage treatment plant (STP) constructed between Bavdhan and Pashan to curb pollution in Pashan Lake is now complete and awaiting formal inauguration. The plant, with a capacity of one million litres per day (MLD), uses advanced Integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) technology to treat wastewater before it reaches the lake.

For years, local residents and environmental activists voiced concerns about untreated sewage from Bhugaon to Bavdhan flowing directly into the Ram River, contributing to pollution in Pashan Lake. This led to mosquito infestation, and an overgrowth of water hyacinth, severely affecting the area’s biodiversity and public health. The project, launched in 2023 under the 15th Finance Commission with a budget of Rs 5.5 crore, included repairing existing sewage lines and laying a new 1,200-mtrs.-long, 900 mm diameter pipeline.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) led the execution. Once operational, the STP will treat nearly 10 lakh litres of sewage daily. The treated water will be reused for gardening and construction, helping reduce the ecological footprint and improve the lake's biodiversity and overall environmental quality.
