Siliguri has been included in the Government of India’s Urban River Management Plan (URMP), marking a major step in restoring the city’s rivers.
Following an agreement between the West Bengal and Union governments, rivers including the Mahananda, Fuleswari, Jorapani, and Sahu will undergo systematic rejuvenation and cleaning. As part of this initiative, the sewage treatment plant (STP)-III and the fecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) are expected to be inaugurated by February 2026. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is executing three planned STP projects, with STP-III at Fulbari already completed, STP-II construction expedited, and the third location finalised.
The total project cost is estimated at Rs 361 crore, with tenders for the remaining work to be floated by March. A dedicated state-level committee has been formed to oversee and fast-track implementation. Mayor Gautam Deb said, “It is a major achievement that Siliguri has been included in the Urban River Management Plan. This initiative will help rejuvenate our rivers and, with the completion of the STP projects, ensure that they remain clean in the future.
