The Southern Railway, on 17 March 2010, conducted a speed trial run on the
122-km Mayiladuturai-Villupuram broad gauge section in Tamil Nadu.
The locomotive embarked on the trial run at a speed of 110 to 120 km per
hour. The maximum permissible speed limit for passenger safety is to be
determined after the speed trial run.
Work on the project covered 32 major and 290 minor bridges. Passenger traffic
on the section is likely to be inaugurated once Chief Commissioner, Railway
Safety, issues clearance certificate.
Addendum:
The newly converted Villupuram - Mayiladuthurai section was opened for
passenger traffic on 23 April 2010.
