Fuel loading at Unit 3 of Nuclear
Power Corporation's Tarapur atomic power plant in Maharashtra has been
completed. The 540 MWe unit is ready for commissioning soon, although it would
take a few more months for the plant to turn commercial. NPCIL has officially
set January 2007 as the deadline for turning TAPP-3 commercial.
According to reports, the fuel loading
was complete and the primary heat transport system and moderator were filled
with heavy water. The reactor, based on pressurized heavy water reactor
technology, would use 13 bundles of uranium, each weighing 24 kg.
It may be mentioned that Unit 4 (also
of 540 MWe) turned commercial in September 2005, ahead of Unit 3, due to
technical problems with the latter. On commissioning of Unit 3, the Tarapur
Atomic Power station will have a total capacity of 1,440 MWe spread over four
units (2 x 180 MWe + 2 x 540 MWe). NPCIL's total capacity will stand increased
to 3,850 MWe with 16 nuclear reactors.
