The Tamil Nadu government has launched a plan to transform the state into a global seafood export hub, aiming to achieve exports worth USD five billion (approx. Rs 41,750 crore) by significantly enhancing value-added processing and coastal infrastructure.
The announcement was made during the Tamil Nadu Seafood – Business Connect event held in Chennai, where top officials engaged with global importers and domestic seafood players to forge partnerships. State Industries Minister Dr TRB Rajaa stated, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu aims to shift away from merely exporting raw catch to becoming a centre for processed, high-quality seafood products.”
The plan includes the creation of modern processing units, cold chain logistics, and export-grade packaging facilities across the state’s 1,076-km coastline, the second-longest in India. The state will draft a detailed roadmap and offer strategic investments to support the initiative, as it positions itself in response to rising global demand for processed, sustainably sourced seafood.
