The Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation (TNPGCL) has prepared feasibility reports for a new 600 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Thoothukudi, estimated at Rs 6,000 crore.
After evaluating four sites, land near the existing thermal facility was found most suitable. The proposal follows the announcement by former Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji during the 2025-26 state budget session. According to TNPGCL officials, the project will strengthen local power generation, reduce transmission losses, and ensure reliable supply for households, industries, and agriculture in southern Tamil Nadu, which currently relies heavily on northern and western plants.
Tamil Nadu’s peak power demand reached 20,840 MW last year and is projected to rise six to seven percent annually. To meet this, TNPGCL plans new thermal projects totaling 6,486 MW over five years, including the nearly completed North Chennai Stage III (800 MW), Udangudi Stage I (2x660 MW), Ennore SEZ (2x660 MW), and the proposed Thoothukudi unit. Reports will be submitted for government approval before work begins.
