The Directorate of Municipal Administration has granted administrative sanction for the construction of five new waste transfer stations in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, aiming to streamline solid waste management in the rapidly growing municipal corporation.
With a combined capacity of 500 tonne per day (TPD), these facilities are expected to reduce haphazard dumping and optimise waste transportation. Transfer stations serve as interim hubs where waste is deposited before being transported to final processing or dumping sites, reducing the number of trips needed and potentially lowering transportation costs.
The stations will be built at TVK Nagar (50 TPD), Madambakkam (150 TPD), Mangalagiri (150 TPD), Kannadapalayam (150 TPD), and Zone 2. The total estimated project cost is over Rs 31 crore, with individual allocations as follows: TVK Nagar with Rs 3.34 crore, Rs 9.77 crore forMadambakkam, Mangalagiri with Rs 9.78 crore Kannadapalayam at Rs 8.13 crore, and Zone 2 with Rs 2.58 crore (funded through TCMC)
The funding split is 33 percent Central, 22 percent state, and 45 percent urban local body. The project was approved by the State High Powered Committee (SHPC) in November 2022, with officials directed to begin work immediately, ensuring full documentation.
