Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has inaugurated the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system in Chennai, providing a centralised platform to operate reservoirs, including Chembarambakkam, Red Hills, and Poondi.
The project automates sluice gate operations, allowing officials to track water storage levels, inflows, and discharges from a central control room. An Integrated Reservoir Management Centre spanning 1,088 square metres has been constructed in Chennai, while sub-control rooms have been set up at each reservoir. Using real-time data, authorities can anticipate flood inflows during the monsoon and remotely open or close sluice gates, enhancing water management and disaster preparedness. The system not only streamlines reservoir operations but also improves efficiency and safety by enabling centralised monitoring.
In the future, the Tamil Nadu government plans to expand the SCADA system to cover approx. 90 dams across the state, creating a comprehensive network for reservoir management. Officials highlighted that the initiative marks a significant step toward modernising water infrastructure and flood control.
