Tata Power has secured approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Mumbai over the next two years.
This advanced system aims to significantly boost the city’s power grid resilience and sustainability. The BESS will feature black start functionality, allowing for rapid power restoration to critical infrastructure like metros, hospitals, airports, and data centres during grid disturbances. The technology also optimises reactive power management, supporting more efficient energy use during peak demand.
Additionally, it supports capex deferral by reducing the need for costly grid infrastructure upgrades. Beyond load balancing, the BESS will provide ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support, enhancing grid stability. The system also facilitates better integration of solar energy, storing excess power generated during the day for later use, thereby increasing the consumption of green energy and helping meet energy storage obligations.
The full 100 MW system will be distributed across 10 strategically located sites near key load centres in Mumbai. All operations will be monitored and controlled from Tata Power’s Power System Control Center (PSCC).
