Torrent Power has signed a long-term sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Japan’s JERA Co. for the supply of up to 0.27 million tonne per annum (MTPA) of LNG over a 10-year period, starting in 2027.
The LNG will primarily be used to operate Torrent Power’s 2,730 MW Combined Cycle gas-based power plants (GBPPs) in India. This move is aimed at meeting the country’s increasing power demand, supporting peak demand periods, and balancing renewable energy generation. Additionally, the LNG will supply Torrent Power’s city gas distribution (CGD) unit, Torrent Gas (TGL), to cater to the growing demand for household, commercial, industrial, and CNG vehicle usage.
The company plans to explore further LNG procurement options in response to its rising energy needs. “Torrent Power intends to enhance its portfolio diversity and meet energy supply needs reliably,” the company said in a release.
