The Tuticorin Port Trust intends to increase its cargo handling capacity to
55 million tonne in the future. It is in the process of issuing tenders for more
berths.
Presently, the Trust is on its way to raise capacity by 22 million tonne by
March 2011 from the existing 22.81 million tonne. Some of the projects under
execution include deepening of the port channel to 12.8 mtrs (from 10.7 mtrs),
construction of shallow-water jetty and mechanisation of cargo berths.
