As part of ongoing efforts to clean the Gomti River, Jal Nigam (rural) is set to establish four new sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 342 million litres per day (MLD).
These STPs will intercept sewage from some of Lucknow's largest drains, including those from Nagariya, Sarkata, Basant Kunj, Wazirganj, Jiamau, and Mastemau, which currently discharge untreated waste directly into the Gomti, contributing to pollution. The projects are aimed at diverting the sewage for proper treatment before it reaches the river. One of the proposed STPs, a 145 MLD plant, will treat sewage from the Nagariya and Sarkata drains. Detailed project reports (DPRs) for these STPs, estimated to cost around Rs 671 crore, have been submitted to the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).
Once land allocation is completed, these projects will receive central funding under the Namami Gange programme. Currently, Lucknow has six main STPs, with a total operational capacity of 584 MLD.
