The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the allotment of seven acres of land from the 66.7-acre Tanda Bijesi village-based agricultural farm in Pilibhit to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
This land will be used to set up a basmati seed processing facility, training center, and demonstration farm. The 30-year lease, with a possibility of extension for 40 more years, will cost a nominal Rs 10 per year as lease rent, and Rs 100 per acre as a concessional premium. After the lease expires, the land will be returned in an encumbrance-free state. The project will also include a research centre, high-quality seed production unit, and a NABL-accredited lab for testing basmati DNA and pesticide residues to meet global export standards.
Dr. Ritesh Sharma from the Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) said, "Under the seed production component of the project, we will produce the nucleus, breeder, foundation, and certified seeds of Basmati and will also train the farmers to produce and process the seeds of all 4 types. This is targeted to increase the production of globally recognised Basmati in Pilibhit and other districts.”
