Prime Minister, Narendra Modi inaugurated the Udhampur-Katra rail link today. The first train took off from the station in Trikuta hills in Jammu & Kashmir’s Reasi district.
The 25 km long Udhampur-Katra railway line, being commissioned after prolonged delays, has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,132 crore.
Meanwhile, trains will now be able to reach Katra directly following the commissioning of the rail link part of the operational 53 km Jammu-Udhampur railway line. This will enable pilgrims headed to the Vaishno Devi shrine to travel directly to the base camp at Katra.
The project part of the Jammu-Udhampur-Katra-Quazigund-Baramulla railway line is the biggest project in the construction of a mountain railway. From Jammu to Baramulla, the length of the new railway line is 345 km. Presently, work is under progress for the remaining sections.
