The Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a new Rajpura-Mohali railway line in Punjab, estimated to cost Rs 443 crore and covering 18 km.
Previously, trains from Ludhiana had to route through Ambala to reach Chandigarh, which increased both distance and travel time. With the new direct link between Rajpura and Mohali, the journey will be shortened by around 66 km. This development will ensure seamless connectivity between all 13 districts of the Malwa region and Chandigarh.
Alongside, he proposed a new Vande Bharat train service connecting key cities—Firozpur Cantt, Bhatinda, Patiala, and Delhi, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity. The journey will span 486 km and take approx.six hours and 40 minutes to complete. Minister Vaishnaw highlighted a sharp rise in railway investments in Punjab, from Rs 225 crore during 2009-14 to over Rs 5,421 crore currently. Expressing gratitude towards Minister of State Ravneet Bittu for supporting the project, the Minister emphasised the government's commitment to infrastructure growth.
