Vedanta's thermal power units, Meenakshi Energy (MEL) and Vedanta Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant (VLCTPP), have signed a 500-MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL).
The PPA, effective from 01 February, 2026, to 31 January, 2031, allocates 300 MW to MEL and 200 MW to VLCTPP, at a tariff of Rs 5.38 per kWh. This contract secures a substantial share of TNPDCL’s 1,580 MW tender. Rajinder Singh Ahuja, CEO of Vedanta Power, highlighted the importance of reliable base-load power for India's energy security. The PPAs bolster revenue visibility and financial strength, supporting future growth plans, including a proposed demerger of Vedanta’s power portfolio.
In 2023, Vedanta acquired Meenakshi Energy, a 1,000-MW thermal power plant located in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, and successfully implemented a swift revival plan that restored the plant to full operational capacity within two years. Similarly, the 1,200 MW Vedanta Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant (VLCTPP) in Singhi Tarai, Chhattisgarh, previously known as Athena Chhattisgarh Power, was acquired in 2022 as a partially constructed project. By August 2025, the first 600 MW unit of the plant was successfully commissioned.
