Hindustan
Petroleum Corporation's (HPCL) 570 km long Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad petroleum
products pipeline became completely operational in March 2002.
The pipeline
would transport petroleum products such as high speed diesel (HSD), motor
spirit (MS), superior kerosene oil (SKO) and naphtha from HPCL's Visakhapatnam
refinery to different parts of Andhra Pradesh
The 350 km long
stretch of pipeline between Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada had been commissioned
in May 1998 with a capacity of four million tonnes, for evacuating petroleum
products from the refinery for distribution in the consumption zones through
HPCL’s terminals at Rajahmundry and Vijayawada.
The extension of this
pipeline up to Secunderabad involved an additional 223 km of pipeline with
an intermediate tap-off-cum-booster station at Suryapet and the final receiving
station at Ghatkesar.
The throughput
of the Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada stretch, which was 1.33 million tonnes in the
first year of operation in 1998-99 and 2.60 million tonnes and 2.98 million
tonnes in the subsequent two years, touched 3.20 million tonnes in 2001-02. The
throughput of the entire stretch of the Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad pipeline is
expected to go up to 5.38 million tonnes by 2007-08.
