VA Tech Wabag (WABAG) has secured an order worth around Rs 4,400 crore for the 400 MLD Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Project from Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).
The project will be executed by WABAG in joint venture (JV) with Metito Overseas on design, build and operate (DBO) mode. It is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and so far, it is the largest order for WABAG.
The scope under this order includes engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the plant and the associated sea water intake system over a period of 42 months, followed by 20 years of operation & maintenance.
The desalination process will include lamella clarifiers, dissolved air flotation system, gravity dual media filters followed by reverse osmosis and re-mineralization to produce clean drinking water, for distribution to the residents of South Chennai. WABAG will contribute to around 70 percent of the water production through desalination in Chennai.
On completion, it will be the largest desalination plant in South-East Asia. With almost 750 MLD of desalinated water to be produced along the coast of Chennai, it will enhance water security for Chennai city through a stable source of drinking.
The water technology multinational, undertakes its research and development (R&D) initiatives from three dedicated R&D centres located in Switzerland, Austria, and India. Its vision is aligned to ESG goals with a special focus on optimization, recycling and reuse of resources for addressing water challenges.
