West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated a multi-level parking lot built to accommodate around 400 vehicles in Alipore in southwest Kolkata on 9 January, 2023.
The facility, named ‘Somponno’ will be the biggest government-run parking lot in the city once it becomes operational. Built by PWD at a cost of around Rs 50 crore, the facility provides easy access through escalators and separate sections for cars and two-wheelers. It will also have an open food court spread across 5,500 sq ft. Four more storeys are planned for development.
Maintenance and oversight of the facility is entrusted to the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO).
The parking space will serve the requirements of people visiting the Alipore zoo, Uttirno cultural complex, Alipore museum and Dhana Dhanye, an upcoming indoor stadium in the neighbourhood.
