Western Railway (WR) plans to extend the harbour line by eight km from Goregaon to Borivli in two phases, with a completion deadline set for 2027-28. The extension aims to decongest the Andheri-Borivli section. Tenders for the Rs 825-crore rail project in Mumbai are slated to be floated in May, 2024 with the anticipated commencement of work by mid-June.
The first phase will encompass a two km stretch between Goregaon and Malad, scheduled to be operational by 2026-27. The subsequent phase will cover a five km extension from Malad to Borivli, with completion projected for 2027-28. The harbour line currently operates between CSMT and Goregaon.
WR has initiated the preliminary work, including geotechnical investigations, drone surveys and other tasks, as well as obtaining details of existing structures. A total of 1,900 sq. mtrs. of land at 20 locations needs to be acquired, of which 1,740 sq. mtrs. is privately-held. The process for the acquisition of private land has been initiated. In all, 24 private buildings will be affected by the project.
Owing to space limitations, the station at Malad will be elevated, even though all other stations on the line will be at the ground level. A flyover at Malad is estimated to cost Rs 145 crore, while the elevated station is likely to cost Rs 65 crore.
