After nearly two decades of delays, work on the 184.45-km Nagari-Tindivanam railway line is finally gaining full momentum.
The Southern Railway's construction wing is overseeing the project, which began in 2008. A 13-km stretch between Nagari and Podatturpettai is set for completion by March 2026, while the 20-km section between Walajah and Sholinghur will be finished by December 2026. The line is designed to support trains travelling up to 130 km/h. The project is being implemented in two phases, with the first phase covering 65 km from Nagari to Walajah, and the second covering 120 km from Walajah Road to Tindivanam.
The line will enhance connectivity to key industrial hubs and provide alternative routes to major destinations. "Now that land acquisition is complete, the railways should expedite the remaining works," said local resident S Thamarai Kannan. The entire project is slated for completion by March 2028.
