The construction of the 125.20-km Rishikesh–Karnprayag broad gauge rail line is progressing rapidly, marking a major milestone in Uttarakhand’s railway expansion.
Designed to transform connectivity across five key districts, the project is notable for its challenging Himalayan terrain, with 83.07 percent of the route passing through tunnels. Engineers are building 16 main tunnels covering 104 km and 12 escape tunnels spanning 97.72 km, along with 7.05 km of cross-passages. The longest tunnel stretches 14.58 km, reflecting the scale and complexity of the work.
The project also includes 14 major rail bridges totalling 3,076 mtrs. Among them, the Gauchar Bridge rises to 46.99 mtrs., the Srinagar Bridge spans 489 mtrs., and the Devprayag Bridge features a 125-mtrs. span. Additional infrastructure includes six road bridges, two road overbridges, and 38 minor bridges. Twelve new stations are being developed to boost local accessibility. With 201 km of tunnel work already completed, the rail link is set to reshape mobility and economic growth in the region.
