India has inked an agreement with Russia for development of Unit-III and IV of the Kudankulam power plant, in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has inked a General Framework Agreement (GFA) with its Russian counterpart for development of Unit-III and IV. However, certain permissions are required from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AREB), before commencing actual work on the project.
Unit-III and IV, each with 1,000 MW capacity, were stuck over the Right to Recourse Clause of the Civil Liability Nuclear Damage Act 2010 (CLND), as the Russians had been apprehensive about it.
In October 2013, the deal could not be signed over the same issue. However, after hectic negotiations between India and Russia, the issue was sorted out.
