The Visakhapatnam Steel plant has handed over
1400 acres of land at Kanithi, Pedagantyada and Nellimukku villages in
Visakhapatnam district to the Commissioner of Ports, Andhra Pradesh, for the
development of a minor port at Gangavaram.
On 25 August 2004, the state government and the
steel plant has signed the documents.
The Union Cabinet had taken a decision in 2002
authorising the steel plant to give the land to state government for the purpose
of developing the Gangavaram port.
The government had accorded the project to a
consortium consisting of DVS Raju Company of Hyderabad and Dubai Port
International.
The project is still in the initial stages, as
only the land acquisition has been completed
