Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) is reportedly to
issue expression of interest (EoI) for global bidding of three coal mine
projects recently approved by the government. A unique feature of these projects
is that the government has approved outsourcing of over-burden removal and coal
production, the first of its kind in the coal sector.
Approval for two projects -- those of
Bhubaneswari and Kania -- were given in the second week of January 2005. The
third project (Kuldah with capacity of 10 million tpa) was apparently cleared
earlier.
MCL, a subsidiary of CIL, produces more than 60
million tonnes of coal per year. While the NDA government had approved
only one coal project, Basundhra West also of MCL, the present government is
acting fast in clearing pending coal projects.
