Steel Authority of India, on 6 December 2005,
announced plans for modernising its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Orissa with an
investment of Rs.348 crore.
The plan includes acquiring new technology to
upgrade production facilities at RSP. This plan is in addition to the capital
schemes valued at over Rs.3,500 crore currently under various stages of
implementation.
The four coke oven Batteries at RSP would be
rebuilt at an estimated cost of Rs.195 crore. The investment aims at meeting
environmental norms while implementing its massive growth plan. The revamping of
batteries would help RSP to meet its higher requirement of coke for enhanced hot
metal production. About Rs.116 crore would be spent on installing a coal dust
injection system at the plant, which is part of its decision to install
alternative fuel technologies in all the blast furnaces.
The investment is part of SAIL's corporate plan
to achieve 20 million tpa capacity by 2011-12 across its four integrated steel
plants of Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Rourkela (Orissa), Durgapur (West Bengal) and
Bokaro (Jharkhand.)
